Risk Factors

Reducing your risk factors for heart attack will also reduce your risk for stroke. Some risk factors for strokes are inherited. Others are a function of aging. Still others result from lifestyle habits that can be modified with the help of a physician. The risk factors that cannot be changed are age, heredity, male gender, race, diabetes mellitus, and prior strokes. Major risk factors for stroke that may decrease with treatment or lifestyle changes are high blood pressure, heart disease, transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), cigarette smoking, and high red blood cell count. Other controllable risk factors that indirectly increase stroke risk are physical inactivity, elevated blood cholesterol, excessive alcohol intake, and obesity.
