Stroke effects people in different ways, depending on the type of stroke and the area of the brain affected. Damage to the brain from a stroke can cause changes in the body and emotions which the patient must overcome. These may include problems with swallowing, speech and the ability to understand speech, vision, thought patterns, memory, and behavior. Stroke patients can receive help from specialists to enable them to function outside of the healthcare facility.
This help can come in the form of different types of therapy, such as occupational therapy, which helps a patient improve self-care skills such as eating, bathing, and dressing; speech therapy to improve swallowing ability and language skills; and physical therapy to improve body strength and mobility skills.
