Preparing for Surgery/BEGIN Program
The BEGIN (Bariatric Education for Gastric bypass and banding Intervention Novation) program was developed in 2003 with the purpose of improving patient/family education and outcomes for individuals scheduled for bariatric surgery. Because there are high risks involved with bariatric surgery, the BEGIN program prepares patients and family members for what to expect. All patients are required to participate in the BEGIN program.
BEGIN starts with a one month pre-op session that includes an exercise tolerance test; in-depth group nutritional counseling; and additional education sessions. The bariatric coordinator will review the importance of compliance with dietary guidelines and follow-up, as well as emotional support and encouragement.
The second session of the BEGIN program occurs after surgery, while the hospital. The dietitian can review information and answer questions during this session.
The third and final session of the BEGIN program occurs at approximately one month post-op in the surgeon’s office while the patient receives follow-up care. A registered dietitian will meet with the patient/family, review dietary instructions, and answer questions.
